The Oli de Marges – Masia Can Calopa (Collserola) has received the 3rd prize at the 2nd National Awards for the Best Extra Virgin Olive Oils of Catalonia, in the category Small Producers – Intense Green Fruity. The award ceremony was held in Les Borges Blanques and recognises the quality of this organic extra virgin olive oil produced by L’Olivera, in collaboration with the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera.

This award consolidates the trajectory of our olive oil project, as for the second consecutive year an oil from L’Olivera has been recognised at these awards. In 2024, L’Olivera Finques oil was awarded, and this year the recognition has gone to Oli de Marges, reaffirming our commitment to artisanal, local production with social impact.

An agricultural restoration project in the Collserola Mountain Range

The Collserola Mountain Range is the green lung of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, surrounded by the largest concentration of population in Catalonia. Covering 8,259 hectares, most of the range is designated as a Natural Park and managed by the Collserola Natural Park Consortium, a public body formed by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), the Barcelona Provincial Council and the Government of Catalonia.

In recent decades, the abandonment of agricultural and livestock activities has led to the replacement of the traditional agroforestry mosaic with continuous forest, mainly composed of Aleppo pine, a highly flammable species. This landscape change has significantly increased the risk of forest fires, especially during periods of drought and westerly winds, putting both the natural environment and the numerous housing developments and scattered homes within the massif at risk.

Oli de Marges was born from the restoration of abandoned terraces in the Collserola Mountain Range, around the Masia Can Calopa. Through this project, we work to preserve traditional agriculture and transform these areas into a living agroforestry mosaic that contributes to sustainable land management and forest fire prevention in a particularly vulnerable peri-urban environment.

The project combines organic agricultural production, landscape management and social impact, and forms part of the work we carry out as a cooperative to strengthen the link between food, territory and community.

What is Oli de Marges de Can Calopa like?

Oli de Marges is an organic extra virgin olive oil, produced mainly from the Arbequina and Becaruda varieties, recovering local varieties and promoting sustainable family farming. The harvest is carried out manually and the oil is produced through mechanical cold extraction procedures to guarantee the highest product quality.

In terms of its organoleptic profile, it is an oil with an intense green fruity character, with notes of green almond and artichoke, and a balance between bitterness and spiciness that makes it especially suitable for raw consumption.
