Blanc de Serè

The Serè is the northwesterly wind that often blows during winter in Vallbona de les Monges and throughout the surrounding inland region. Like the wind, Blanc de Serè is a fresh, dry wine. It was with this wine that, in 1989, we at L’Olivera decided to move from growing grapes to making wine, embarking on a new adventure that would complete the production cycle and capture in each bottle the full expression of the Vall del Corb landscape and all the excitement of starting a new project.

Youthfulness and complexity go hand in hand in a wine that we want to be fresh and lively, yet full of nuances and character. A wine that embodies our initial intuitions, which inspired us to demonstrate that the landscapes we cultivate and inhabit held the potential to produce great wines.
With Blanc de Serè, we celebrate traditional grape varieties such as Macabeu, Parellada and Garnatxa Blanca, vinified in stainless steel tanks with the aim of achieving their fullest expression. In this region, these varieties reflect the inland Mediterranean landscape, where altitude and the influence of the sea breeze allow the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in a particularly interesting balance between alcohol content and acidity.

Landscape

ORIGIN: Vineyards located in different municipalities within the Valls del Riu Corb subregion of the DO Costers del Segre. A landscape of plots characterised by dry-stone walls that define the vineyards and help preserve soil fertility and efficient water use.

SOILS: Clay-limestone soils with varying levels of stoniness and depth.

CLIMATE: The climate is continental Mediterranean, with cold, dry winters and hot summers, moderated by the sea breeze (known locally as the marinada), which arrives in the afternoons and cools the nights, especially during the ripening period. Rainfall is scarce and mainly concentrated in autumn and spring (350–450 mm annually).

Varieties

Macabeu (70%), Parellada (15%), Xarel·lo (10%) and Garnatxa Blanca (5%)

Viticulture

Organic farming. Hand harvesting in 10–12 kg crates.

Winemaking

Fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, with periodic stirring of the lees. The blend is the result of an ongoing exploration of the young wine we have been producing for the past 30 years. Bottled progressively in small batches according to demand.

Characteristics of the vintage

The 2023 vintage was, like 2022, also very complicated on an agronomic level, especially due to the low rainfall and extreme conditions with numerous days with maximum temperatures above 35ºC. All these elements caused limited plant development and a considerable reduction in production (between 30 and 80% lower than the average in our dryland viticulture conditions). These extreme conditions of heat and drought forced us to advance the harvest to maintain the balance and quality of the grapes. We started very early, on August 18 and finished it on October 4. At least the conditions of drought and low humidity allowed us to harvest the grapes in ideal sanitary conditions and without any fungal infections.

Viticulture and wine processing

Certified organic dry land farming. We harvest the grapes manually with the stems. Each variety is fermented separately in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature between 15ºC and 17ºC. Once blended, the wine is bottled in small batches progressively from December/January to May.

Analysis

Volatile acidity: 0,31 g/l
Residual sugar: 0,4 g/l (glucose + fructose)

Tasting notes

Straw yellow color with greenish reflections, clear and bright.
On the nose, it is complex, with prominent notes of tropical fruit, white flowers, and herbal hints.
On the palate, it has a fresh entry, with citrus notes and floral reminders, and a good acidity that gives it persistence.
Blanc de Serè is an ideal wine for drinking by the glass and pairs well with starters, vegetables, and also fish- and white meat-based dishes.
