The Aula de Can Calopa, our educational project at the Can Calopa de Dalt farmhouse (Collserola), closes the school year with the participation of more than 2,000 children and young people who have taken part in the environmental, heritage and cultural education and awareness activities we develop.

Inspired by its rural context, at the Aula de Can Calopa we propose an active methodology that invites students to do, think and feel in connection with their environment, and to engage critically with the plural society around them. The director of Can Calopa, Lluc Pejó, has highlighted that “we must bring children and young people from the metropolitan area closer to agricultural culture so they can understand the territory around them. It is not only a way of understanding the past; it is above all a way of building the future”. This approach is aligned with the priorities identified by the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Catalonia, which aims to bring the reality of rural life closer to children and young people in urban areas.

In the activities, we invite participants to become farmers for a day, herd sheep, identify wildlife tracks or build a cooperative project. All of them have been designed to generate meaningful learning before, during and after the activities, and are closely linked to the development of curricular competencies. “The Aula de Can Calopa is the result of more than 50 years of experience of L’Olivera in the field of organic farming, inclusion and the Social and Solidarity Economy of L’Olivera,” adds Pejó.

In addition to the school programme, at the Aula de Can Calopa we also offer cultural leisure activities for families and training programmes for different groups. The visits allow people to discover the hidden biodiversity of a vineyard, the architectural heritage of the farmhouse or L’Olivera’s work integration project.

The Aula de Can Calopa is one of the areas of activity of L’Olivera to strengthen the project and share its values. Through this educational and awareness-raising branch, at L’Olivera we reaffirm our commitment to education and peri-urban agriculture as a driver of social transformation.
